Soul Dier - Part 1 : Why « Part 1 »?
Why « Part 1 »?
What’s the contents in each part? Part 1: Prologue + Chapter 1 + Chapter 2
Part 2: Interlude (not confirmed yet) + Chapter 3 + Chapter 4
Does part 1 has a proper ending? Yes.
The main story in Soul Dier is about the protagonist’s journey to retrieve his lost memories. However, part 1 focuses on the stories of two allies he met along the journey instead, one in chapter 1 and the other one in chapter 2. The protagonist is more like a companion in their journeys. In a way, you can say those two are the real protagonists in part 1.
Therefore, the end of part 1 is just the end of the second ally’s story . There are clues about the protagonist appearing here and there throughout part 1, but his story will only be intensively covered in part 2.
To answer the question again, part 1 has a proper ending to conclude the two allies’ stories and a proper break to the main line.
Why separate the game into two parts? So far, we have been working on the game for 5.5 years. We are just a two-person team without any funding. It would be financially infeasible for us to spend another couple of years to finish the whole game.
After thorough consideration, we decided to separate the game into two parts. Note that we had made this decision at around the 3-year mark, so we did not just suddenly cut the game in half recently, but instead, part 1 was well designed around this decision.
It was a difficult choice for us, and slamming « part 1 » in the title will probably hurt our sales. However, this decision gave us more time to polish the game. We believe the game ended up being so much better than if we rushed it. As a bonus, it also gives us more room to extend the length of part 2 to present the story in a better way.
When will part 2 be available? We can’t guarantee.
We had written most of the story for the whole game earlier, designed some new levels, created some assets for them, and it’s not like we’ll be creating a complete new game anyway, so it should take less time than part 1 if we can do it full-time.
However, it will highly depend on how well part 1 performs in sales. If it sells very well, we can put all our time into it; if it doesn’t, we will need to work on other jobs to live, and drag the progress of part 2.
So, if you enjoy part 1 and want to play part 2 sooner, please consider recommending the game to your friends!
